The West Michigan Symphony and Muskegon Museum of Art Announce an Exhibition that Leads to Commissions for Art. Details Inside! 3.16.2014 Deadline

Yes, I'm clipping press releases readily available from the MMA media room. However, I'm the only one who will give you spin and skinny. The West Michigan Symphony has a reputation for getting a bit carried away when an idea is really, really good. Example. The Block Concert Hall started as an idea for a ticket office on Western Boulevard. Be prepared to see your proposal "blow up", so to speak.

Call for artwork submissions for MMA/Symphony exhibition now in place.

The Muskegon Museum of Art and the West Michigan Symphony will present the 75th Anniversary Exhibition: West Michigan Symphony next fall.

In celebration of its 75th Anniversary, the West Michigan Symphony is commissioning artwork for its new office, performance, and outdoor space in the Russell Block building at 360 W Western Avenue in Muskegon, MI.

Commissioned artworks will premiere at the Muskegon Museum of Art, in an exhibition held in honor of the Symphony's 75th Anniversary. The exhibition will run from September 18 to November 2, 2014.

The Symphony is seeking artwork in all media that addresses music, the Symphony, or related topics. Interested artists are invited to submit a proposal for consideration. Artists whose proposals are accepted will be awarded a commission to create the final work of art, which will be installed in the Symphony offices following the exhibition at the MMA. The maximum price of works to be considered for purchase is $1,000. Artists may propose any artwork valued at up to the $1,000 limit.

Your submission packet should include the following:

1)    Sketches, models, or studies for the final artwork. Artists may also submit images and specifications for already existing artworks that address the stated themes.

2)    A written description of the work, including the materials used and final dimensions. Any special requirements for installation should be included.

3)    A completed submission form [PDF], available at the Symphony and Museum offices, or online at the Symphony and Museum websites.

Mail your submission packet to:

Submission packets are due by March 16, 2014. Commissions will be awarded in April. Final artworks are due at the Muskegon Museum of Art by August 30, 2014. Artworks must be finalized for public display, including any necessary framing or hanging devices.

Artists whose proposals are accepted will be paid on delivery of the completed project. Any artworks that deviate from the accepted proposals may be refused.

Artists are encouraged to visit the Symphony in its new headquarters to see the possible exhibition spaces and determine the appropriate scale or locations for the proposed artwork. Proposals may include photographs and sketches of sites within the building if your artwork is tailored for a specific place within the building.
