Submission deadline is November 15, 2013

Winners will be produced at the 2nd Annual

Lake Effect Fringe Festival
February 14-16, 2014 at the Dog Story Theater

Playwrights Welcome!

Stark Turn Players, in its continuing mission to foster local artists, hosts an annual competition to become an incubator for local playwrights to have the opportunity to workshop their works and have them produced at no cost to the playwrights.

Playwrights (Student and Non-Student) in the Greater Grand Rapids Area (reside or attend school in Kent County and it's contiguous counties) are welcome to submit their 10-Minute scripts annually to compete for production slots in our annual season.

The Procedure is simple and relatively painless!

There are two divisions: student and non-student.

Playwrights submit a 10 to 15 minute short play due November 1st of each year.

A maximum of four scripts in each division are chosen for full production in the following February.

Starting in January, the chosen plays begin rehearsals and development.
At performance, the plays are adjudicated by a panel of local arts professionals.

The Best in Show in each division will be awarded the final night of the performances.

The winner of the Non-student competition will be offered a Playwriting Residency for the following season.  The residency includes:

Sitting on the panel of judges for the following year's competition

The workshop and production of a full length piece to be featured in the spring performance slot with profit-sharing stipend

Opportunities to co-write additional productions as requested

The winner in the Student competition will be offered a Playwriting Fellowship for following season.  The fellowship includes:

An invitation to sit on the Play Reading Committee for the following year

The workshop and production of a 20-30 minute piece to be featured in the spring performance slot with profit-sharing stipend

Opportunities to co-write additional productions as requested

JUDGES CRITERIA MAY INCLUDE:
1. ECONOMY: How concisely is the story told? How much urgency underlies each part? Does it meander, do characters talk just enough to make an impression or to get what they want, or do they meander?

2. ORIGINALITY: Are the characters complex, quirky, not rehashes from other plays, movies or TV?

3. EVOCATIVE: Is the piece theatrical, or is it episodic, like a sitcom? Does it inspire good stagecraft? Is it rich with sumptuous imagery?

4. TIMELY/TIMELESS: Are the themes of the play heavy handed, or cliché? Or are they genuine, inspired by the times, truthful, interesting? Does the play "speak" to our audiences, or is it a bit of a stretch to consider the play timely?

5. THEME:  How well does the piece address the theme? The theme this year is OUT OF TIME.

HOW TO SUBMIT:
Playwrights may submit more than one script. Scripts will not be returned.
Please mail 3 printed copies of your 10-15 minute script to:
