Art League Lecture: Richard Kooyman

Michigan artist Richard Kooyman feels connected to a long line of of artists, each one influencing the next. In his talk, Linked to the Past, Painting in the Present, Kooyman will provide a informative look not only into his own work as a Michigan artist, but also into the work and lives of art historical figures that have been major influences on his work. This painterly lineage connects the painting styles of artists from 18th century Europe, to artists who work in Canada, the American Southwest, and the Eastern Seaboard. Kooyman, who was born and reared on the Lake Michigan side of the state will describe not only what it is that he paints but why he is drawn to paint it.
Richard Kooyman is a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Grant, a Michigan Council for the Arts Grant, and the Michigan Governors Award in the Arts, he has exhibited his work across the country and is represented by galleries in Michigan, Chicago, Atlanta and New Jersey. Kooyman received a MFA from Ohio State University and was awarded the Sally Avery Fellowship from the Vermont Studio Center. He has been a visiting artist and lecturer, conducted drawing and painting workshops, and written online about art and being an artist. Kooyman lives and maintains a studio with his wife, the artist Melanie Parke, in Kaleva, Michigan.
